I totally agree that you should reward your commentators! However I totally disagree with spamming. It is a pity that a few ruin it all for all of us, and this really does apply to this type of spamming, which ends up mainly being automated by computers.

I don’t think no follow tags cut down spam at all. The spammers just keep on spamming don’t they? I get their spam comments all the time in my askimet folder. The comments usually don’t make any sense at all and include a lot of links. I get them everyday so I guess the whole ‘no follow’ thing is a failure.

I’ve seen in the last year (mostly) a big do-follow movement of bloggers, who preffer to offer something in exchange for the people spend their time and read / comment on their blogs.
Some bloggers who switched to do-follow blogs also declared that they noticed a nice increase of visitors and comments. Also, a big increase of spammers, but that’s another story.
